An innovative initiative that uses AI to bridge the worlds of hearing and hearing impaired.
With 63 million people in India facing hearing impairment and only 24% of the working-age deaf population employed, the need for inclusive workplaces has never been greater.
With BloomBox, the deaf can now interact with customers and colleagues in the workplace, learn new skills, and become more independent. They can work in organizations like retail outlets, spas, BPO outfits, and enjoy equal opportunities for growth and development.
The BloomBox project has won the Microsoft Imagine Cup Junior 2022 prize for India and was showcased to Mr. Satya Nadella during his visit in Jan 2023. With the support of Azure AI technologies, BloomBox uses a camera, directional microphone, and speakers to translate sign language to voice and voice to sign language. This technology has the potential to transform the lives of millions of people and make the world a better place.
BloomBoxers have worked tirelessly to learn more about the issues faced by the deaf community. They have interviewed deaf people through ISL experts, met ISL instructors, and researched relevant AI technologies. They have also discussed the project with HR managers of employers to understand their specific needs and requirements.
The BloomBox app is designed to build an inclusive workplace for the deaf by integrating them into the hearing world. By using “functional language” and short cuts, the app eliminates the dependency on facial expressions and helps the deaf community communicate more effectively.
